Brook rumoured to be facing Jessie Vargas
22nd May, 2016
It's looking as though Kell Brook will bid to add to his IBF belt in a unification fight with Jesse Vargas later this summer. The rumoured location is Bramell Lane, home of Sheffield United FC, continuing an interesting/lucrative trend of British boxers associating themselves with football clubs to win favour with the supporters.
On the face of it this is a decent fight, I'd make Brook a favourite but Vargas really impressed me with his recent dismantling of the previously undefeated Sadam Ali. That, along with his stirring efforts in the twelth round against Tim Bradley, are making me think that perhaps he does have enough pop to keep Kell honest in this matchup.
That said, should this fight go ahead and should Brook win, I would hope that Kell and his promoter Eddie Hearn have a more aggressive and inspiring career path plotted out going forward than what we've seen so far. Brook is an incredible talent and the extent that his career has been hampered by inconsistency and less than stellar opponents, both pre and post winning the IBF title, has been a travesty.
Simply put, Brook is at the stage of his career where every fight needs to be a big one. Over the next two years he needs to be sharing the ring with the likes of Thurman, Porter, Bradley and of course his mandatory, the impressive Spence Jr. Say what you will about Amir Khan, but there are elements of his career path that Brook would be wise to take heed of. Khan has managed to build a following of sorts both sides of the Atlantic and that helped him secure the recent payday against Canelo.
For Brook to reach that level, every opponent from here on out needs to be a name opponent. Hopefully that starts with Vargas and he kicks on from there.
